Offered is an exceptionally presentable example of arguably the single scarcest Hall of Famer from the celebrated Old Judge issue, Bid McPhee, a second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds who is remembered as the last player in baseball to take the field without a glove. McPhee was only an average batter, accumulating a .271 career mark, but he routinely led the league in fielding percentage, despite his refusal to wear a glove. Not only does the offered N172 example display an EX/MT front surface highlighted by a predominantly blemish-free photo with a strong and well-contrasted image, but it features one of the scarcer pose variations of this already scarce issue: "fielding, hands head-high." If you're a 19th Century HOF collector, this is obviously the McPhee pose you want, as he brandishes his infamously bare hands in preparation to catch a ball. The reverse shows some prominent writing from an earlier collector and is no doubt the reason for the opined mark of SGC 20. A monumental card in incredible condition for the price of a dog!
