Graded AUTHENTIC by PSA. Issued in 1895 by the Mayo & Brother Tobacco Works of Richmond, Virginia, this landmark set includes 40 different players. Eight of these players are featured in two different varieties, bringing the total number of cards in the set to 48. One of just a couple of major sets from the 1890's, the 1895 Mayo Cut Plug release is one of the sesquicentennial 19th Century issues within in our hobby and may very well be the most difficult to collect in higher grade. The offered keepsake appears at first glance to be among the finest examples of this legendary card ever encountered. The obverse offers a exceptionally well images and registered presence of the first man to garner 3000 hits. Along the fragile black edges there appears to be no black ink added which is the common stumbling block with the issue. As well each of the corners retain a freshness not usually encountered with the fragile issue, with only the upper left showing a slight chip. The surface is a regal presentation with nary a disturbance to be encountered. The reverse shows what appears to be light remnants of paper and possibly adhesive from potentially be mounted but if that is what appears to be the stumbling block as well as the reason for the AUTHENTIC grade it has been removed exceptionally responsibly and appears not as a detriment but rather as a badge of honor as to this cards cherished state and total preservation.
