Compiling a complete 520-card set (minus the Big Four: Wagner, Plank, and Magie, and Doyle variations) in any condition can be a daunting task, even with the advent of the internet and global digital communication. Prior to that, when collectors relied almost solely on trade shows and publication advertisements, it had to have been next to impossible. Given the size of the issue and the method of distribution, one could have spent a lifetime assembling a complete 520-card unit, and indeed, many have tried and failed, throwing in the towel in frustration at trying to track down the more difficult subjects. Offered here is certainly one of the most impressive compilations we've seen, missing just three cards aside from the aforementioned Big Four, completely graded by SGC and sporting an incredible 4.86 GPA. All that's missing are the O'Hara and Demmitt St. Louis variations and the Hooks Wiltse Portrait No Cap card. Spearheaded by the four Cobb cards-Red Portrait SGC 4.5, Green Portrait 4, Bat Off 4.5, Bat On 3, as well as the Walter Johnson inclusions-both SGC 5, the Christy Mathewson examples-Portrait and Dark Cap SGC 4.5, White Cap SGC 5.5, as well as the incomparable Cy Young-Glove Shows and Bare Hand Shows both SGC 4.5, Portrait SGC 5, this is a world-class collection representing untold hours and effort. Two Hall of Famers are offered in the incredible grade of SGC 7 NM-Addie Joss and Vic Willis Throwing, fellow Cooperstown inductee Miller Huggins is in an SGC 6.5 EX-NM+ holder and numerous others are in 5.5 EX+ and 5 EX grades, while the important Southern League card of Shag Shaughnessy is also graded SGC 6.5 EX-NM+.
