There can be no doubts about the continued rise in popularity of Ty Cobb collectibles, and examples from the celebrated T206 issue have become particularly cherished. Cobb, of course, has four different entries in the Monster, but the portrait poses seem to be the most desired amongst advanced collectors. Offered here is an extremely pleasing example of the red background portrait version, graded EX 5 by SGC. The central image of the inaugural class Hall of Famer presents with unparalleled detail and clarity, set against a deeply saturated red backdrop that shows no signs of fading over the last century and a decade. Those features alone make this an extremely desirable item, but the appeal is furthered by the relatively scarce advertising reverse, touting El Principe de Gales cigarettes. The most respected T206 research site places the EPDG reverse at 20th in terms of difficulty out of the 39 total backs available. The important ad back is clean and boldly struck in bright red pigment, and no age toning appears to be present. The perimeter of this outstanding keepsake is well within the standards for the technical assessment given by the stringent evaluators at SGC, with the lower left endpoint appearing above-grade and showing the least evidence of handling. The Red Cobb has become one of the most important keys to the premier tobacco card issue in the hobby, and the offered specimen would make an excellent addition to any advanced collection!
