With all of the elite-grade Hall of Famers and rarely seen low-pop commons featured in the breakup of this world class DeLong series, the most coveted of all might be this PSA 8.5 example of Pepper Martin, the one and only NM/MT+ card ever evaluated by PSA with none graded higher. PSA has graded over 2,800 examples from the 24-card 1933 DeLong series and has seen fit to grant a higher grade to just 2 specimens (a McManus and a Traynor), but considering that the Martin card is one of only 2 in the series that is formatted horizontally (the other being Lefty Grove), the featured item might be the most enticing pasteboard ever produced by the Boston gum company (with the exception of a top-grade Gehrig or Foxx). The depth and boldness of the central image is surreal, with red, yellow, black, brown, green, blue and white colors grabbing your attention from the sliding Martin, a four-time All-Star. The centering is virtually dead-on and the corners approach MINT status overall with the bottom right horizontal corner appearing GEM MINT. What better way to make a statement on the PSA Set Registry than to add a specimen that no other collector can match?
