In 1919, the Goudey Gum Company was founded by Enos Gordon Goudey. He opened his first factory in Boston, Massachusetts, eventually earning the title of, "penny gum king of America." The up-and-coming business tycoon threw his hat into the baseball card arena with the debut of 1933 Goudey Baseball. Designated in the American Card Catalog as R319, the 239-card 1933 Goudey Baseball set was the first sports card product packaged with bubble gum in every pack. A majority of the cards within the 1933 Goudey Baseball set are adorned with a small, thin banner along the bottom border of the card. "Big League Chewing Gum" is the ad tagline found on most of the cards. The exception is with several of the cards printed later in the year. The only other accompanying text is the player's full name in a portion of the colored background towards the top of the card. The Goudey card backs provide an anecdotal and biographical write-up in green ink with further gum-related advertising. Printed on a total of 10 sheets, each containing 24 cards, those that were printed on sheets eight (cards #190-213), nine (cards #97-99, #128-129, #142, #214-231) and ten (cards #107-114, #121-127, #232-240) are missing the red banner on the card front. The featured collection appears almost too good to be true with a total of 222 of the 240 cards represented the cards appear to be of VG to NM condition with some lesser, albeit with one major defect. Each of the offered cards has had the aforementioned thin tagline of "Big League Chewing Gum" neatly trimmed across the bottom of the card as well some of the cards do appear to have additional slight trimming to the sides of the card. What at first appears to be a catastrophic defect actually results in an exceptionally attractive adaptation of the original and can easily be appreciated as almost more aesthetically appealing just as the original artist had intended. The featured cards will absolutely be limited to "Authentic" designations from a third-party grading firm, but below we will grade the cards on their appearance as if the missing bottom portion were intact. The star cards grade the following; (please note the grades are for appearance and are not taking into consideration of the missing portion) 1 Bengough GD, 5 Herman VG, 7 Lyons EX, 19 Dickey VG, 20 Terry EX+, 22 Traynor VG, 23 Cuyler VG, 29 Foxx VG ink, 31 Lazarri EX, 42 Collins EX/MT, 49 Frisch EX, 76 Cochrane EX/MT, 79 Faber EX/MT, 89 Speaker NM, 92 Gehrig NM, 109 Cronin NM, 110 Goslin NM, 117 Maranville EX/MT, 119 Hornsby NM, 125 Terry NM, 127 Ott EX/MT, 133 Lindstrom NM, 138 Pennock EX, 144 Ruth NM (additional trim to sides) 147 Durocher EX+, 149 Ruth NM, 154 Foxx VG, 160 Gehrig EX/MT, 181 Ruth EX/MT, 188 Hornsby EX/MT, 202 Hartnett VG/EX, 211 Wilson EX+, 216 Gomez VG, 220 Grove EX/MT, 222 Gehringer EX+, 223 Dean NM, 230 Hubbell EX, 234 Hubbell NM.
