The Goudey Gum Company had a winning philosophy when they produced their 1933 collection; offer colorful pasteboards with fantastic artwork and easy to read biographies on thick, sturdy cardboard. Oh ... and pack in a whole bunch of Babe Ruth cards!" Featured here is The Babe's card #181, "the green Ruth." Unlike the Ruth portraits with red and yellow backgrounds, card #181 employs a different image of "The Sultan of Swat," slightly larger and more detailed than the "bat on shoulder image," providing a more realistic representation of the hulking size of the man. Many collectors find the "green Ruth" to be the most aesthetically pleasing due to the nature in which the backdrop contrasts with Ruth's white jersey and the red "Big League" nameplate. The offered card has earned the grade of PSA 8 and rates as one of the finest specimens in existence. The left to right centering is very close to perfect with a mild preference toward the bottom edge, while each endpoint clearly surpasses NM/MT limits with the top corners closer to NM/MT+ status. The central image is problem-free with the green and red color retaining a pack-fresh appearance, while the reverse is deeply printed with subtle hints of color from the heavily saturated front surface. Hailing from our break-up of one of the top 10 1933 Goudey collections ever assembled, this top-notch collector's pick rivals, if not exceeds, virtually any other example you will ever encounter in the grade. If you're ready to go green, this is the time to do it!
