"... I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. I like to live as big as I can." Those words came from baseball legend Babe Ruth, and there probably isn't a single historian that would dispute that "The Bambino" meant every word of it. When Goudey released their massive 1933 baseball card collection, Ruth wasn't just the most dominant sports figure in American history, he was a world wide celebrity whose persona transcended anyone who ever lived. More Americans could identify Ruth by sight than President Roosevelt, and he was more beloved as well. So Goudey cashed in on Ruth's stardom, inserting four different cards into their 240-card set, the toughest of which to find in high-grade is the yellow #53 like the SGC 80 EX/NM 6 example offered here. Centered inoffensively toward the left side with edges and endpoints that breeze past EX/MT condition and race toward NM with a clean and bright reverse that rivals any in its class. The glowing yellow backdrop, a breeding ground for unwelcome stray print that is the primary cause for downgrades, appears as problem-free as those few scant examples that reside at the NM/MT tier. At this grade level, this '33 Goudey Ruth is an extremely satisfying card and a great value for any collector at this price point.
