Babe Ruth' appeared on four different cards in the inaugural Goudey series, but with "The Bambino" entering the twilight stages of his career, Goudey turned their attention to teammate Lou Gehrig by making the 31-year old "Iron Horse" the new focal point of the next series. Though Gehrig was not a home run masher on par with Ruth, he did have one title under his belt (winning it two more times, in '34 and '36) and went stride for stride in batting average while setting "Ruthian" type numbers for RBI, breaking the 150 mark seven times in his career. You could actually make a case that "The Iron Horse" nickname is as much applicable to his consistent and unwavering offensive productivity from 1927-1938 as his record-setting 2,130 consecutive game streak. By adding a "Lou Gehrig says..." banner to part of the '34 Goudey set, the company was both acknowledging a changing of the guard and giving their seal of approval to the new king of baseball continuing the tradition of New York Yankees dominance. The featured card of Gehrig is graded SGC 88 NM/MT 8 and offers appropriately sharp NM/MT corners and edges around two powerfully bold surfaces, completely free of stray print or any other telltale signs of age. The depth of the pale green-blue backdrop against the image of Gehrig is amazingly fresh while the midnight blue banner brings out the brightness of the Gehrig portrait at the bottom as well as the white frame. A real cornerstone to any advanced collection, and if you're fortunate enough to secure the winning bid, you too might consider yourself the luckiest man on earth!
