In what is believed to be his first cardboard appearance, here is a group of 19 cards depicting the Man of Steel, issued in 1940 by Gum, Inc. Now if you're not much into non-sport but you recognize that name, that's because they're the same company that issued the 1939, 1940, and 1941 Play Ball cards. In fact, some of the 1940 Play Ball examples have advertising on the back touting the Superman cards. Included in the offered lot are card numbers 5, 6, 8, 18, 22, 24, 28, 31, 32, 34, 36, 39, 40, 41, 42 (2), 43 (2), and 48. Condition ranges from POOR to VG with most being somewhere in between, but the dazzling colors remain largely unfaded.
