"First Negro player in modern organized baseball." The first sentence on the reverse of this 1948 Leaf card of Jackie Robinson wouldn't be delivered in that manner today, but it nonetheless was a significant event in baseball, and American history. Even in the face of constant criticism and threats upon his family, Robinson still delivered with a .297 batting average and a league-leading 29 stolen bases in 1947, earning him National League Rookie of the Year honors. While the centering of this 1948 Leaf rookie card of Jackie Robinson moderately favors the west edge, the card enjoys an overall conservative assessment of SGC 4.5 VG/EX+ because the corners and edges are more in line with EX+ to EX/MT specimens and the central image color is bold without displaying an overabundance of stray print that smirches the surface of most examples. This an important example of a baseball immortal that is unquestionably a necessity in any world-class vintage collection.
