The 1952 season was one of the most highly anticipated in baseball history, especially if you were a resident of "The Big Apple." The 1951 Yankees had just taken another championship, this time it was over the New York Giants, and budding superstars Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays had each camp not only thinking a return to the World Series was inevitable, but the makings of a dynasty were in play. However, Mays would only play 34 games the next season, called into military service by the United States Army, and the two teams would never reunite in another "Subway Series." At the same time, a new company named Topps began producing baseball cards with huge, sprawling artwork that offered a refreshing alternative to the diminutive Bowman brand. Mays' absence did nothing to diminish his popularity and the 1952 Topps Willie Mays cards ranks among the most coveted in Topps' inaugural issue. The offered specimen comes highly recommended, a PSA 8 gem that possesses slightly above grade corners, the top left of which is arguably GEM MINT, and superb image quality that can rival the best of specimens. While centered mildly toward the bottom edge, this beauty is a high-end PSA 8 all things considered and would certainly enhance the very best of collections.
