Drafted into the Army during the 1952 season, causing him to miss the final four months of the season, Hall of Famer Willie Mays was not on the baseball diamond when his 1952 Topps card was released. He also missed the entire 1953 season, likely costing him a shot at 700 career round-trippers, but stormed back in 1954 to win his only National League batting crown. Featured is Mays' alluring 1952 Topps card, which exhibits bold color and crisp focus of "The Say Hey Kid's" image in the forefront of a robust purple backdrop. A slight favoring of the left side and moderate rough cut on the right are typical characteristics of the issue with sturdy NM corners providing the foundation for the impressive SGC 84 NM 7 grade. The reverse, although framed toward the right side when viewed horizontally, gives no cause for concern as the gray cardboard canvas houses a deeply printed red and black biography and statistics. A thoroughly pleasing card for the grade!
