Sealed away within the confines of the very active and artistic display box is a collection of 24 absolutely pristine wax packs from the 1st series of the 1968 Topps collection. While many collectors don't rank the 1968 Topps set among the most aesthetically pleasing of the Topps issue from the 1960s, mostly due to the dot matrix borders that tend to vary from a light tan to a dark brown, there's no doubting that the central image photography is superb, the bright yellow and deep black contrast of the reverse is pleasant, and of course, the rookie cards of Johnny Bench and Nolan Ryan, as well as the card of Mickey Mantle, are very appealing. It's been over a half-century since this issue was released and even the most avid collectors will tell you they've gone many years, maybe decades, since they last had an opportunity to land an unopened box for their collection. As stated, this box hails from the first series of the collection, with the possible stars and Hall of Famers include appearances on a dozen different League Leaders cards as well as issues of Brooks Robinson, Billy Williams, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, Rod Carew, Willie Stargell, and Bob Gibson. Many people think the 1968 Topps series is one of the easier collections from the decade to find GEM MINT examples but the PSA pop report numbers tell a different story as less than 3% of all submission to PSA came back GEM MINT. If the winning bidder was determined to open it and land some significant specimens that could garner the GEM MINT flip, and that would be a big decision to make considering how few of these unopened wax boxes are still in existence, it could prove to be a worthwhile gamble. BBCE authenticated and sealed.
