Though the Diamond Stars series ended up being a 108-card collection, produced on nine sheets of 12 cards each, the original plan was to make a larger set. Several player cards were designed but never made it past the artist stage and were omitted from the final collection. Here's one such piece of "phantom" artwork featuring 223-game winner Mel Harder that never made into the Diamond Stars series. Measuring 4 1/2" x 5 3/8" the card shows all the telltale signs of a DS production, with bold green, yellow, blue and red colors and a carefully crafted central image. "Mel Harder Clev" is written along the bottom border and there's a mld horizontal crease midway through the card. An amazing prototypre from a truly wonderful pre-war series.
