When Bowman produced the 1948 football series, they did so by printing three 32-card sheets. The first sheet (numbered #1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 etc...) was released at the beginning of the season, the second sheet (#2, 5, 8, 11, 14, etc...) halfway through, and the final sheet (#3, 6, 9, 12, 15 ...) toward the end. Because the demand for football cards decreased as the season drew to a close, the third sheet containing the cards that were the "multiples of three" were short-printed, much like the high number series in many baseball card issues. The featured sheet contains 20-cards from the original 32-card production of that third series sheet, each card short printed by Bowman. Lujack, Conerly, Turner and Pihos are among the superstars, with a ghost image overprint from the first sheet lightly visible on the reverse. Light wrinkles and mild wear around the perimeter are relatively minimal given the extreme age of this rare survivor. A tremendous piece that provides a glimpse into the often flawed production of Bowman's inaugural football card set.
