The 1966 Topps baseball set is one of the most intriguing collections of the decade for several reasons. The 598-card set features the typical legends like Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, and Pete Rose, with rookie cards of Hall of Famers Jim Palmer, Fergie Jenkins and Don Sutton, and a very difficult card #1 of Willie Mays. However, it is also one of the most condition-sensitive sets ever produced by Topps, with poor centering and central image tilts being the most common problems, especially among the high-number series. With these barriers to achieving upper tier grades, coupled with the scarcity of the short prints and a smattering of minor card variations that brings the complete set up to 612, the 1966 Topps master set has proven to be one of the most difficult assemblages to compile in high grade. Presented is a 1966 Topps Master set that is just 25 cards short of completion with the only significant superstar cards needed being #195 Morgan, 300 Clemente and 500 Aaron. Currently placing #8 on the PSA Set Registry with an 8.50 set rating, if completed at its current GPA of 9.22, would rank #3 on the Current Finest list. The large majority of the cards in the set, 568 in all, are graded PSA 9, including #1 Mays, 30 Rose, 50 Mantle, 70 Yastrzemski, 72 Perez, 92 Yankees Team, 100 Koufax, 110 Banks, 120 Killebrew, 160 Ford, 200 Mathews, 320 Gibson and 598 Perry. There are two cards graded PSA 9 (OC) (#40 and 221), four graded PSA 8.5 (#76, 101, 237 and 309), eleven graded PSA 8 (#41, 49, 51, 62, 105, 219, 296, 424, 426, 555, and 562) with a PSA 6 #126 Palmer and PSA 5 #539.
