Even with the rookie cards of Hall of Fame hurlers Jim Palmer, Don Sutton and Fergie Jenkins present, the card of Mickey Mantle, now entering his 16th season, stands first and foremost as the grand prize of the series. And at the MINT level like the card offered here, it's one of the toughest to find as the 1966 set is arguably the Topps issue most fraught with inconsistent centering of any in the decade. However, the featured specimen is truly up to the task, almost perfectly framed while maybe just a hair toward the top edge if you really want to nitpick. The image of the aging Mantle is spot-on accurate, but an important feature of this particular beauty that escapes most specimens, even at this elevated grade, is the sharpness of the background, amplifying the seemingly cavernous confines of the house made famous by Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio before him. The reverse is every bit as equal to the task, a bright white canvas with deep black and salmon pigments that lay out the Hall of Fame resume of The Mick to that point. Currently, only one higher graded specimen exists on the books at PSA.
