Though tall and lanky when he first made his appearance in Oakland, Mark McGwire raised eyebrows with his 49 homer rookie season and became a unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year honors. Several more seasons of 30 plus home runs earned him and teammate Jose Canseco the nickname "The Bash Brothers" and led the Athletics to the playoffs in four out of five seasons from 1988-1992, winning the World Series in 1989. But McGwire's real heroics came after moving on to St. Louis, leading the National League in home runs with 70 and 65 in 1998 and 1999 respectively. McGwire used this Rawlings Adirondack Big Stick during the 1998 season when he bested Roger Maris to capture the single-season home run record. Fantastic evidence of game use of this uncracked bat is displayed with ball marks, stitch impressions and plenty of pine tar all over the surface. Stamped in the knob is "MAC 25" with "98" to denote the year of use and "33 McGwire" written in pencil by the factory, a note to the 33 ounce weight (the bat is also 34 1/2 inches in length. A fantastic stick that carries plenty of significant history. LOA from John Taube - PSA/DNA with a grade of GU 10.
