It would be one of the last events where New York Yankees legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig would meet, and just a decade later, both icons were gone. Four years into retirement, coupled with Gehrig's abrupt departure from the game, had baseball fans around the nation optimistically thinking that the Bombers' decades long era of dominance might be coming to a close. But as we know, Joe DiMaggio carried the torch for many more seasons before handing it to Mickey Mantle, ensuring an unprecedented run that lasted over 40 years. This 7 x 9 original type I photo comes from Lou Gehrig Day in 1939, shortly after "The Iron Horse" delivered his legendary speech to a crowd of 60,000. The photo is in VG condition overall with some creasing and several press markings on the reverse, none of which detract from the majesty of the central image and lends to the photos originality. Time stamped Jul 04, 1939, it's an important photo that captures a truly memorable moment in baseball history. LOA from PSA/DNA.
