As far back as 1875, Allen & Ginter began inserting cardboard slabs into packages of their cigarettes in order to make them stiffer and reduce breakage, and it wasn't long after that when they realized that those cardboard pieces could include advertising, or perhaps even something else to incentivize buyers of their product. In 1887, they issued the Worlds Champions, a set of 50 subjects printed in full color that included 10 baseball players. Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward is depicted on the offered collectible, graded EX 5 by SGC. To date, just 4 examples have graded higher.
