As rare as the batting variation of Ty Cobb's 1907 Wolverine Co. rookie-era postcard is, the population reports of both PSA and SGC show that this portrait variety is even more scarce with just 15 examples on record, combined. Cobb was barely out of his teens and not even a full-time starter entering the 1907 season, but his emergence as a baseball legend launched the Detroit Tigers from a mediocre 71-78-2 record in 1906 to an American League pennant-winning 92-58-3 mark in 1907. The featured 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" postcard carries a magnificently detailed image of "The Georgia Peach" exhibiting a light horizontal crease that does little to hinder the majesty of the image. Writing on the reverse and cancellation marks on both sides add to the allure and authenticity of the piece as it was used for its intended purpose, without a thought that the subject would one day be among the most remembered icons in the history of the sport. While the overall assessment is at a minimal level, the eye appeal of the piece is fantastic! A truly prized pasteboard that makes a statement in any world-class collection.
