While the T206 series stands as the flagship of collectibles for the early 20th century, many of baseball's timeless legends appearing in the series are also presented on regional issues that are far more scarce. If a team was winning championships, regional businesses were distributing business/trading cards of the players to drum up sales and connect to the city's people. The Detroit Tigers hadn't had much success on the field in their first 5 years of existence, but in 1907, Hall of Famer Ty Cobb became a full-time starter and the Tigers reeled off three consecutive American League Pennants from 1907-09. Capitalizing on their success, businesses in Detroit bestowed upon our hobby such rare issues as A.C. Dietsche, H.M. Taylor, and Wolverine News, collections that are highly coveted by advanced hobbyists who dedicate countless hours trying to track them down. But the rarest of them all is the Topping & Co. series, which broke from tradition to offer a unique format showing a black and white portrait within a six-sided black, yellow, and white star. Of course, Ty Cobb headlines the 20-piece series with the postcard standing as perhaps the most elusive card in the "The Georgia Peach's" library. Only 10 examples are on file at PSA and SGC combined, each logging an EX/MT example, with this EX+ specimen listed as the third highest graded in existence. Impressively bright and clean, the card shows some inevitable light chipping around the yellow and black-edged perimeter while the corners are admirably squared, projecting well above the modest grade. The unwritten-on postcard reverse, understandably toned from age, is blemish-free with the black print showing no evidence of fading. If you're a world-class Ty Cobb collector, this is likely that "white whale" you've been trying to hunt down, so make the most of this golden opportunity to land one of the finest examples of one of the scarcest issues of the great Ty Cobb!
