We have a Hall of Fame for baseball players, but if there was a Hall of Fame for baseball cards, the T206 Honus Wagner would be Babe Ruth. OK, that's confusing, but while that orange-pigmented iconic pasteboard that coincidentally is lot #1 in this auction stands as the flagship of an entire hobby, it's interesting to note that if you take the total population of all five of the 1911 D304 ad-backs of Wagner (Brunners Bread, Butter Krust Bread, Martens Bakery, General Baking Company, and the Weber Bakery card offered here) on the pop reports of PSA and SGC combined, it still comes up very short to the number of graded T206 Wagners on file. In 1911, even at 37 years old, Wagner was still performing at a superstar level with 9 home runs, 89 RBI, 20 stolen bases, and a .334 batting average, which earned him his 8th career National League batting title. The offered D304 Weber Bakery card shows heavy surface creases that limit the grade to SGC 1 but the near-perfect centering and excellent color improve the overall eye appeal above the assessed grade. The Weber Bakery ad on the back is well-positioned with bold black print, seemingly unbothered by the surface blemishes that appear less prevalent on the reverse. Here's an opportunity to acquire what is truly one of if not the most exclusive Honus Wagner card ever produced, and you don't have to dive into seven-digit territory to land it.
