Joseph Jefferson Jackson appeared in exactly 10 Major League Baseball games from 1909-1910, and given the fact that the final run of 350-460 subjects in the T206 issue was thought to have been released from late 1910 to early 1911, it's no surprise that he wasn't considered for inclusion in that printing. That's a bit of a shame, as 1911 was a breakout season for him, batting .408 with an OBP of .468. And of course, he was banned from the league after the 1920 season, so cards from his playing days are rather limited. In fact, the three most favored issues, the 1914 and 1915 Cracker Jack and the M101-4/5 all utilized the same image, a snapshot taken by noted period photographer Charles Conlon. Of those, however, only the M101-4/5 features the entire photo. Offered here is a remarkable example from that set, graded at the VG-EX+ 4.5 level by PSA. The M101-4/5 issue is often referred to as Sporting News, but the fact is that that periodical was only one of several companies that utilized the card backs for advertising. They were also promotional vehicles for several regional issues, not printed in nearly the same numbers as the Sporting News. The tendered collectible features one of the scarcer reverses: Gimbels, a department store having locations in New York, Philadelphia and Milwaukee in 1916. A total of 83 subjects from the entire release have been submitted to PSA, and the offered Joe Jackson specimen is the one and only of that group! To date, SGC has evaluated just two other copies, making this one of just three known to exist. This card is highlighted by a crisply detailed image of the immortal slugger, with light, uniform corner wear and no creases throughout the entire surface. The Gimbels reverse ad is clean and boldly struck, touting "Everything for Boys of Every Age." An absolutely stunning museum-quality piece destined for inclusion in an advanced, world-class collection!
