While a little more uniform in presentation than its predecessor, the 1934 Goudey collection was considerably downsized from 239 cards to just 96 examples, which makes it a far more attainable goal for vintage set-builders. Even with its greatly diminished size, the '34 Goudey set still offers some noteworthy issues with final cards of several stars and Hall of Famers released during their playing days, Lou Gehrig (featured twice) and Dizzy Dean foremost among them, as nationally distributed baseball cards would all but vanish from American culture for the remainder of the decade. While the 39-year-old Babe Ruth is noticeably absent from the series, a mysterious development since he was featured so prominently on a quartet of cards the previous year and still "had the goods" with a 34-homer, .301 performance in 1933, the set does include the rookie card of Hank Greenberg and the very popular card #1 of "The Beast" Jimmie Foxx.
