With an aging Babe Ruth nearing the end of his career, "The Bambino" was absent from the 1934 Goudey baseball series, pared down from 240 cards the previous year to just 96 for the follow-up series. However, Lou Gehrig appeared twice in the 1934 Goudey collection, as he did the year before in Goudey's inaugural series, signaling a changing of the guard in New York with "The Iron Horse" stepping out of the immeasurable shadow of his more famous teammate. It was in the 1934 season that Gehrig displayed and achieved one of the most statistically amazing seasons in baseball history with a triple-crown performance that would include a .363 BA, 49 HR, and 165 RBI. Without the Babe in the lineup, teams were more inclined to pitch around Gehrig, and though he would lead the league in walks each year from 1935-37, he still earned the top spot in the American League for home runs and took league MVP honors in 1936.
