When the Leaf Gum Inc. of Chicago debuted their inaugural baseball card release in 1948, the first such mainstream issue of the post-war era, they knew that one name would add instant allure and help make them relevant in the sports card market, Babe Ruth. Released within the set as card number 3 (of course), the Babe is featured in his later years with the Yankees like a larger-than-life superhero set against a stunning fire engine red background. Four strong upper-end NM corners counter the centering variance to the right that is all too common with this framing-challenged assemblage. What is unusual for the issue is that the reverse appears almost perfectly centered with a problem-free slate gray canvas that houses deep-bold print. An amazing tribute card to perhaps the greatest offensive juggernaut in baseball history, released right around the time of his premature passing.
