There are a huge number of rookie cards in the 1949 Bowman series of subjects that went on to Hall of Fame careers, but the debut issue of Satchel Paige rises head and shoulders above them all. One of only three mainstream cards ever produced of the enigmatic hurler during his major league playing days (the others manufactured by Leaf, and Topps), the featured card is a top-notch example that easily earns the elevated grade of PSA 7. The card has four solidly square NM or better corners, excellent centering if not just a touch toward the top edge, a rich pastel green-blue background, and particularly deep, bold color in Paige's cap and uniform. The registry is virtually perfect, depicting the legend in uncanny sharpness, while the border is a brilliant white and the reverse is brilliantly struck. An absolutely stunning card that is completely worthy of the grade, if not more.
