The 1949 Bowman set is highly prized for its extensive selection of rookie cards and Bowman debut issues, and leading the way is the light blue backgrounded first appearance of the enigmatic Satchel Paige. Though he never got to face major-league opposition in the prime of this career, some consider Paige to be the most tantalizing pitcher to ever take the bump. A nearly perfectly centered image, as well as a strong perimeter, are two of the highlights of this special example. The color is particularly bold with a fantastic image of “Ol Satch”, a Negro League legend that had been barnstorming the country before appearing in this set at the alleged age of 41; no one really knows for sure how old he really was.
