There was a time when the 1951 Bowman rookie card of Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle was, dare we say it, underrated. Given the larger-than-life magnitude of the 1952 Topps Mantle card as royalty in the baseball card world, the 1951 Bowman Mantle could only reside in the shadows, but that is not the case anymore. Presented for bidding is unquestionably one of the defining cards ever produced by Bowman, Mickey Mantle's true rookie card from the 1951 Bowman issue. Imaged as an 18-year-old up-and-comer, Mantle had been lauded by Casey Stengel as the heir apparent to Joe DiMaggio and was granted the horizontal format to introduce his arrival. Rounded corners and the typical centering shift toward the top horizontal edge are commensurate with the PSA 3 VG grade, however, the image of Mantle is very eye-pleasing for the assessment, and the reverse, while showing some remnants of wax, is far better centered.
