What do you do when you're brand new to the baseball card business and one of your top draws, Willie Mays, is away performing military service? Right, you print a card anyway. The featured card was issued in the spring of 1952 while Willie was away in the service, yet after his Rookie of the Year season of 1951, Mays was so popular that Topps wasn't about to pass on creating a pasteboard of him in the inaugural issue. The featured card is graded NM by PSA and displays the usual centering bias toward the left side, easily counterbalanced by an unusually bold and bright central image of the future legend and supported by a deep purple backdrop, coated with a heavy gloss overlay that gives the card an almost wet appearance. The corners and edges are right in line with the grade and the reverse is bright and clean. An admirable example of a key card to the set.
