Well, here we are again, another MHCC world-class auction and the chance to acquire a PSA graded example of the single most important Topps card ever produced; the iconic 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. As each year passes, the legend of the ‘52 Mantle grows, as does the price at virtually every given grade level. Though considered a “double-print” with the theory that there are twice as many Mantle cards in circulation than there are of any other subject in the high-number series, the fact remains that even with prices pushing upward as they have been for decades, the actual supply of 1952 Topps Mantle cards pales in comparison to the demand. The offered card is graded PSA 4, still within reach for many collectors as of now but quickly pushing past the point of affordability for all but the most well-financed aficionados. Positioned moderately toward the lower right corner, typical not just for the Mantle card but for 1952 Topps high-numbers in general, the card has accurately assessed VG/EX corners and no significant disturbances on the reverse. The central image, other than the positioning within the border, is extremely pleasing with a deep aqua background that accentuates the well-delivered and universally beloved image of Mantle, recognized by all experts and virtually every novice in the baseball card collecting world. Compared to many examples in its grading tier, this is a very impressive issue that immediately elevates the status of any collection.
