He came into the league as a pioneer trying to eradicate the longstanding tradition of racial segregation in baseball, and he succeeded. By the time the 1952 season rolled around, Jackie Robinson was just one of several black major league baseball players. With five major-league seasons under his belt, Robinson batted a combined .320 and won the 1949 NL batting title while averaging 15 homers and 85 RBI per season and leading the league in stolen bases twice. It seemed only fitting that Robinson was positioned next to Yankees legend Mickey Mantle in the 1952 Topps high-number series, one of the most taunting issues that features a close-up portrait against a deep red backdrop. The featured specimen has secured the elite grade of PSA 7 and offers a remarkable central image surrounded by a bone white frame, revealing a very slight centering bias toward the top edge that is easily dismissed given the typically troubled framing of the issue. The corners are in line with NM expectations if not slightly better while the reverse is aptly clean. A truly magnificent card that is more than capable of holding its own in any world-class set.
