In 1955, Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle had finally been established as one of the greats of the game and a fitting heir apparent to Joe DiMaggio, who picked up the title from Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth before him. Mantle would earn his first home run title with 37 round-trippers while also leading the American League with 11 triples and 113 walks while posting a .306 batting average, a precursor to his Triple Crown season in 1956. Any collector who has sent 1955 Bowman cards in for grading knows the meaning of disappointment. While it's expected that the wood-grained edges and endpoints will likely expose some chipping, it seems the graders take great umbrage to even the slightest imperfection. This example of Mickey Mantle is an exception, well-famed with a wonderful image of "The Commerce Comet" and endpoints that expose virtually nothing. Even the reverse is up to the task, a clean, problem-free canvas that helps the card to earn a very impressive PSA 8 NM/MT grade. Only 15 examples have graded higher at PSA out of almost 5,000 submissions.
