Every so often, a prospect comes along that is so highly-touted that it's virtually impossible to live up to the hype. And when they don't, we accuse them of "not reaching their potential" while giving little thought to the idea that maybe, just maybe, it was us who built them a pedestal that was simply out of reach. It started off that way for Mickey Mantle. Already anointed as the next legend to carry the torch held by Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio before he played his first game (in front of a crowd that was larger than the entire population of his hometown), Mantle's shoulders buckled under the weight of such lofty expectations. But he fought back, and in time, embraced the role of leading the Yankees dynasty for yet another generation. It was 1956 when Mickey Mantle led the Yankees to another world championship with an MVP winning Triple Crown performance that Mantle not only earned his place beside the other Yankees icons but accomplished a feat that none of his predecessors could match. While not the most valuable card of the Mickey Mantle library, the 1956 issue of "The Commerce Comet" is certainly one of the most popular, partly because of that amazing Triple Crown campaign also because it's just so darn attractive! Providing plenty of bold colors and a fantastic overall central image of the Yankees legend, the 1956 Topps example of "The Mick" marks his triumphant return to the Topps family after a brief stint exclusively with Bowman. This card has been graded NM/MT+ 8.5 by PSA. The bright pigments are further accentuated by a glistening application of original factory gloss, and even the slate gray reverse with its full spectrum of pigments stands up to the advanced grade. A mild rough cut lines the bottom and right horizontal edges, while the red and yellow nameplates further add to the pack-fresh appearance. A very worthwhile investment for any collector looking to add a key piece to their collection.
