Though it will never earn the exalted status bestowed upon the inaugural Topps set of 1952, the 1957 Topps set is a classic collection and a pioneer in baseball card production for several reasons. First off, the card size was reduced to the standard 2½ inches by 3½ inches, measurements that have remained in place to this day. Secondly, Topps put aside the artist's drawings and colorized black and white photos used in the past to offer on-field photographs of the players, certainly not with the same clarity and sharpness of today's glossy collections but possessing an old-school charm that hasn't existed in decades. The set is also loaded with key rookie cards, from Drysdale and the Robinson duo of Brooks and Frank to debut cards of Mazeroski, Herzog, Bunning, and Richardson. Even the bookends of the set, card #1 Ted Williams and card #407 Yankees' Power Hitters featuring Mantle and Berra, are two of the most popular issues in the collection. Offered here is the complete 1957 Topps set, as consistent as is possible with each card graded PSA 7. For the ambitious set-builder, a few improvements here and there will send this assemblage moving up the PSA Set Registry in a hurry. All the rookie cards, Mantle, Koufax, Mays, Clemente, and the inverted shot of Aaron appearing to be batting left-handed ... each graded NM by PSA. A stunning set that every vintage collector should be adding.
