Every baseball fan remembers Roger Maris' magical 1961 campaign when he broke Babe Ruth's longstanding single season home run record, but many people are surprised to learn that he had a rather lackluster career with two other teams prior to joining the Bronx Bombers. Maris broke into the bigs at 22 years old with the Cleveland Indians, touted as a promising long ball prospect. And while he put a good many pitches over the wall, he ended up back on the bench far too often. In 540 at-bats with the Indians, Maris hit 23 home runs with 78 RBI, but his .231 batting average had him packing his bags for Kansas City, shipped out as part of a 5-player trade. After 2 more mediocre years in KC, the Athletics sent him off to the Big apple, where he would achieve baseball immortality. The presented piece of baseball history is a game-used cap worn by Maris in 1958 with the Cleveland Indians. Maris only played in 51 games for Cleveland before his trade to KC in June, though the cap shows good use with staining and general wear on the inner lining. A faded black marker "5" appears on the underside of the bill and a Wilson label is on the back of the lining along with printed size "7 1/4." A tag extends down from the Wilson label but is blank, having faded over the years. A fantastic piece of baseball history, worn by the Roger Maris struggling to stay in the bigs and long before he became Roger Maris the baseball icon! LOA Mile High Card Co.
