The Topps Company decided to take the 1962 set in a whole new direction from the previous year's "meat and potatoes" format. In addition to expanding the set size to 598 cards, Topps introduced a wood-grained border reminiscent of the 1955 Bowman series. The lower right corner is made to look like it is curling, perhaps inspired by "WANTED" signs posted on trees in the Wild West days, with the player's name, team, and position in the open area. As one would imagine, the vulnerability of the wood-grain corners and edges causes chipping problems that allow high-grade specimens to demand a premium. What's even more daunting is that several cards in the early printing of the 2nd series (#110-196) carry a distinct greenish tint that was eliminated in later print runs, while eight other players inexplicably appear on variations showing two different poses. Finally, certain cards in the high series (#523-598) were "short-printed" and became available in significantly lesser quantities. All things considered, the assemblage of a world-class 1962 Topps Master Set is a painstaking process that requires great patience and determination. The featured master set is complete and checks in with an incredible 8.126 GPA. There are 50 cards graded PSA 9 MINT including #143 Ruth, 208 B. Martin, 398 Drysdale AS, and 469 Aparicio. Nine cards are graded PSA 8.5 and three are graded PSA 7, with the rest of the set coming in at PSA 8.
