The Topps Company slightly shortened the size of the 1963 collection to 576 cards, but quality doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with quality .... or popularity. The colorful lower borders were a grand slam with collectors, but their susceptibility to chipping right out of the pack made this as difficult a set to build in high grade as virtually any set before it. Released in three series, the middle cards have proven tougher to find in high-grade than either the first or third series. The Pete Rose rookie card (PSA 8) is an icon in the hobby, but other rookie cards in the set include Willie Stargell, Bill Freehan, Rusty Staub, and Tony Oliva. The '63 series also included popular multi-player issues (Friendly Foes, Pride of the NL, Bombers' Best, etc....) that make it a legendary collection for vintage enthusiasts. The featured assemblage is a complete master set, which expands the collection to 583 cards, and ranks #21 on the PSA Set Registry with a sharp 8.092 GPA. There are 49 cards graded PSA 9 MINT, eight cards graded PSA 8.5, and three cards graded PSA 7, with almost 90% of the collection and all of the star and Ahll of Famer checking in at PSA 8.
