In the discussion concerning Hall of Fame rookie cards in the basketball genre, naturally the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan will be at the forefront, followed by the 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain, the 1948 Bowman George Mikan, perhaps the 1969 Topps Lew Alcindor, the 1980 Topps Bird/Magic, but one that definitely needs to be mentioned is the 1972 Topps Julius Erving. The Doctor was the first basketball superstar to elevate his game above the rim, and his inaugural pasteboard issue came at a time when basketball cards, in general, were on the backburner in terms of popularity among collectors. Often found woefully off-center, the offered example is a spectacle of placement perfection, while the susceptible lemon-yellow backdrop is largely free of the common print overspray. A thoroughly MINT perimeter combines with these attributes to earn the coveted grade of MINT 9 from PSA, and to date, just a single example has graded higher. A must-have for any advanced Hall of Fame hardwood collection!
