His career tragically ended at exactly 3,000 hits, Roberto Clemente was such a beloved hero that ever after his demise on New Year's Eve 1972, Topps went ahead and included him in the 1973 set as a tribute to the fallen icon. Clemente had risen the ranks to become one of the best pure hitters of the game, winning four batting titles and topping the .300 mark in 12 of his final 13 seasons, topping .340 five times. He also won the Gold Glove award in his final 12 seasons. The featured item is a GEM MINT specimen from his final season with virtually every characteristic at the peak of perfection. Casually flipping a ball in the air while on the field, a testimonial to his laid-back demeanor, the image is centered within its confines and aided by a bright baby-blue team name. It's right out of the pack fresh! The reverse is an untouched canvas that has avoided the common print dots that have disqualified so many others from GEM MINT consideration. Only 25 examples are graded PSA 10. A truly magnificent and befitting example of an amazing baseball player, national hero, and humanitarian.
