Multi-player "rookie prospect" cards were common in the 1960s and into the 1970s, but some players that went on to Hall of Fame careers got a solo appearance to start in kind of a hit-and-miss fashion. 1962 Lou Brock, solo. 1963 Pete Rose, not so much, and collectors prefer not to have their legendary star share the billing with a group of ordinary Joes. The 1980 Topps Bird/Dr. J./Magic card is an exception, and how could it not be, with three absolute legends and two amazing rookie cards packed onto one pasteboard. But of course, well all like balance, so this 1981 Topps card of Magic Johnson is one of the most spirited second-year cards ever made, introducing The Magic Man's solo arrival. Graded PSA 10, there are just 73 in existence at the top of the PSA grading scale as the series has the same problem with centering as its three-panel predecessor. This one is centered virtually to perfection with full GEM MINT qualities and pack fresh colors. A tremendous overall specimen that is finally getting its recognition as one of the most important cards from the hardcourt.
