Selected with the #1 overall pick of the 1984 NHL draft, Mario Lemieux was the most celebrated NHL arrival since Wayne Gretzky. A gifted playmaker and swift skater, Lemieux also possessed a massive 6’4”, 230 lb. frame that enabled him to move defenders as easily as he could fake and deke by them. After opening his NHL career with consecutive 40-goal seasons, Lemieux passed the 50-goal barrier in 1986, working his way up to 70 goals in 1987 and 85 goals in 1988. Lemieux was becoming an unstoppable force, routinely topping the 50-goal mark and earning the nickname “Super Mario”, with many arguing that he may be even better than the great Gretzky. However, Lemieux’s career was plagued with injury, suffering from spinal disc herniation, chronic tendinitis of a hip-flexor muscle, chronic back pain, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Even with all the games Lemieux missed because of injuries, he is the #7 all-time point scorer in NHL history.
Offered is a game-issued and autographed Pittsburgh Penguins jersey of all-world Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux from the 1989-90 NHL season. Inside the back collar is the “Maska” manufacturer’s tag with “52”written in pen to denote the size, with “Mario Lemieux 66” signed in black marker on the Penguin’s logo. A “41st NHL All-Star Game” patch is stitched onto the left sleeve to identify the year, and all numerals, logo, “LEMIEUX” nameplate, and Captain’s “C” are tackle twill stitched.
