Selected with the #1 overall pick of the 1991 NHL Draft, center Eric Lindros was the most anticipated arrival since Mario Lemieux seven years earlier. Refusing to play for the Quebec Nordiques, he was traded to Philadelphia Flyers for six players (including future Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg), two 1st round draft picks, and $15 million cash. Like Lemieux, Lindros was a large man, standing 6"4" and 240 pounds, and possessed superior natural ability that few NHLs could match. But Lindros had a mean streak, and displayed his penchant for vicious hits as much as his goal-scoring prowess. Lindros and the "Broadstreet Bullies" of Philadelphia appeared to be a perfect match.
Lindros immediately established himself as one of the NHLs top players. Anchoring the first line with John LeClair (6'3" 226 lbs.) and Mikael Renberg (6'2" 235 lbs.), the trio's imposing physical strength and playmaking ability earned them the nickname "The Legion of Doom." Lindros scored over 40 goals in each of his first two seasons and won the Hart Trophy as MVP in the lockout-shortened 1995 season by scoring 29 goals and 41 assists in 46 games. He led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup finals in 1997. In eight seasons with Philadelphia, Lindros scored 290 goals and 659 total points in just 486 games. However, Lindros' aggressive play made him susceptible to injury, suffering several concussions as well as a collapsed lung that limited him to just 55 games in 1999. Refusing to re-sign as a restricted free agent following the 1999 season, Lindros sat out the 2000-2001 season and his rights were traded to the New York Rangers. With each passing season, Lindros continued his intimidating style of hockey, resulting in additional injuries that limited his availability. Finally, as a 2006-2007 member of the Dallas Stars, Lindros retired, his eight concussions having caught up with him and superior hockey skills now faded.
