Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born into slavery in Virginia and rose to become a prominent leader of the black community of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Offered is a typed signed letter on "The Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for the Training of Colored Young Men and Women" letterhead, dated May 11, 1909. Mr. Washington is addressing Miss Elizabeth M. O'Shea, regretfully declining her invitation to speak at the Laconia Women's Club. The letter is framed in an attractive 16 1/2" x 22" display, and a full LOA from PSA/DNA is included.
