This 1938 Type I photo of Yankees legend Lou Gehrig is a remarkably rare find. Known as baseball's original "Iron Horse," Gehrig set a legendary record by playing in 2,130 consecutive games, a feat unbroken for 56 years until Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed it in 1995. As a powerhouse first baseman and left-handed hitter, Gehrig posted a stellar career batting average of .340, along with 493 home runs and 1,995 RBIs over 17 seasons. Playing alongside Babe Ruth, he helped lead the Yankees to six World Series championships and earned two American League MVP awards. His 1931 season, where he notched an incredible 184 RBIs, which remains a benchmark in baseball history. Yet Gehrig’s influence extends beyond his statistics. In 1939, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), later known as "Lou Gehrig’s disease," which forced him into retirement and inspired his moving "Luckiest Man" farewell speech—one of the most iconic moments in sports history. Gehrig passed away in 1941 at only 37, but his legacy endures as a testament to resilience, humility, and sportsmanship. In recognition of his impact, he became the first MLB player to have his jersey number retired (#4), a fitting honor for a life and career of such magnitude. This photo captures Gehrig in his Yankees uniform, standing with a soft smile behind a house, offering a rare glimpse into his personal side. Signed by Gehrig in red ink—an uncommon choice, especially for him—the autograph adds to the photo’s unique allure. On the back of the photo, it signed by countless players, including Roy Henshaw, Art Jorgens, Ernie Koy, Steve Sundra, Paul Dean, Mickey Owen, George Ruppert, John Size, Terry Moore, Don Gutteridge, Ken Raffensberger, Lefty Gomez, Johnny Nee, Joe DiMaggio, Jack Sturdy, and 4 other signers. The photo is deemed Type 1 Authentic by PSA and the autograph grades as an 8 by PSA/DNA's certification team. Measuring 4-1/2" x 6-3/8", this piece is a remarkable blend of history and rarity, embodying the spirit and legacy of one of baseball's most beloved icons. The offered item appears minimally NM or better and offers an exceptional quality free of any creasing. A terrific item that comes with our utmost of recommendations.
