The etchings by Jerry Garcia involve a completely different process from the lithographic printing of his sketches and watercolors. To create an etching, the artist first draws the image directly on a zinc plate, which is then processed, inked, wiped and printed by hand for each print. The paper, hand-cranked through the press under thousands of pounds of pressure, draws the ink out from the incised lines, resulting in the well known embossed surface of etchings, which can not be duplicated through any other printing process. This piece is entitled First Try as it was most likely his first attempt at the etching process and is a spatial study of his initials. Plate size is 3 3/4" x 5 3/4" and paper size is approximately 7 1/2" x 11 1/2." One of just 50 Artist's Proofs of this edition. Signed by the artist in pencil. Editioned by Roberta Weir and the Weir Gallery in 1991.
