Anyone who has ever taken an American History class will know the name John Wilkes Booth, a noted 1860s actor whose ties to the Confederacy and vehement opposition to the abolition of slavery led to his assassinating President Abraham Lincoln. Considered a handsome man by men and women alike, Booth had a series of photos created and attached to a cardboard backing that he would hand out to family, friends and fans, his favorite being the pose offered on this "cartes de visite" (business card) or CDV. An intriguing piece of Americana that any historian would greatly appreciate as part of their collection.
