To advanced hobbyists, completing a T206 set (minus the "big four" of Wagner, Plank and the Magie and Doyle variations) is the ultimate achievement in the hobby. Many a collector have given it their all, but the expansive T206 set certainly has a record of far more wins than losses, which is why it is respectfully known as "the monster" within baseball card circles. Putting aside for a moment the century-plus age of the cards, the very size of the set and the method of distribution of the cards made it next to impossible for anyone in the time period to come remotely close to building a complete collection. Offered over a three year period with multiple player poses and a total of 15 different ad backs (not including the Ty Cobb reverse or the different factory variations), collectors today still don't feel completely confident that the complied checklists of cards for each particular ad back is entirely accurate. Out of the many defeats comes a victor, as presented in this incredible assemblage that ranks #9 on the PSA Set Registry and carries a set rating of 4.431. A Mordecai Brown (Chicago shirt) is graded PSA 7, and included in the 38 PSA 6 specimens are Hall of Famers Baker, Bender (portrait), Clarke (holding bat), Huggins (portrait), Joss (portrait), Marquard (follow-through), McGraw (finger in air), Waddell (throwing) and C. Young (glove shows). The quartet of T206 Cobb cards is impressive with "bat on shoulder" rating PSA 5 and the red, green and bat off shoulder cards all garnering a grade of PSA 4. Other key cards include Mathewson dark cap PSA 5, Mathewson portrait PSA 4.5, Mathewson white cap PSA 5, C. Young bare hand shows PSA 4, Young portrait PSA 3.5, W. Johnson hands at chest (Old Mill) PSA 5.5, W. Johnson portrait PSA 4, and the two very difficult variations in Demmitt St. Louis PSA 4 and O'Hara St. Louis PSA 3. This set is being offered two ways; in its entirety as well as individual lots, with the final sale determined by the greater total of the set versus the sum of the lots. Our website will automatically reflect whichever portion has received the highest bidding total. Placing a bid on this lot constitutes bidding on the complete group
